Armed conflicts and mass displacement are nearly always associated with a significant increase of tuberculosis (TB). In northwest Syria, WHO and its partners run three specialized TB centers, equipped with medical supplies and lab, run by skilled staff, catering to Idleb, Afrin and rural Aleppo. Overcrowding is a hallmark of the living conditions of millions in Syria’s northwest; a key risk for TB transmission. Additionally, the impact of hostilities has limited case-finding and control of the disease and disrupted treatments, further heightening the looming risk of drug resistance. WHO’s focus in Syria’s NW is on strengthening general awareness and improving patient service. The services provided in the Idleb center by WHO’s partner, HIHFAD (Hand in hand for Aid and Development) are diagnosis, sputum analysis, radiology, drug provision and information on TB. The average number of beneficiaries per month is 250, although it fluctuates due to the fighting.Armed conflicts and mass displacement are nearly always associated with a significant increase of tuberculosis (TB). As part of the COVID-19 pandemic response, a team of experts from the WHO's Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean (EMRO) carried out a six-day mission in Tunisia. The mission’s goal was to support the response to the epidemic in priority areas. The delegation was led by Dr Rana Hajjeh, Director of Programme Management at EMRO, accompanied by five WHO technical experts primarily responsible for health emergencies, communicable and noncommunicable diseases, risk communication and community engagement. During the mission, WHO teams worked closely with their counterparts in the Ministry of Health to assess the situation, identify challenges and make recommendations. This visit began with a first meeting at the Ministry of Health and continued with visits to various health facilities. Each visit was followed by a situation assessment meeting. An evaluation report and recommendations were presented to the Minister of Health at the end of the mission. Dr Rana Hajjeh, Director of Programme Management, WHO/EMRO (center). WHO recommends preventive chemotherapy as the core strategic intervention against 5 NTDs: lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminthiases and trachoma. Preventive chemotherapy is the large-scale delivery of safe, single-administration, quality-assured medicines, either alone or in combination, at regular intervals, to entire population groups.  This photo was taken in Yemen during a preventive chemotherapy campaign (Mass Drug Administration) to control schistosomiasis.   WHO recommends preventive chemotherapy as the core strategic intervention against 5 NTDs: lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminthiases and trachoma.
