  • Crumbling infrastructure, overcrowded households, poor physical conditions, lack of hygiene facilities and often insurmountable obstacles to access to medical care are the norm in many areas. Yet at the same time, Yemen faces some of the highest disease outbreak levels in the world. WHO launched a campaign to combat mosquito-borne diseases in 6 of Yemen’s governorates after heavy rainfall hit many of Yemen’s governorates. The campaign included awareness-raising activities conducted by community health volunteers, indoor fogging, residual spraying, larval source management and control of breeding spots. Community health volunteers knock on doors to ensure that health information reaches the households that need it most. Extreme weather events like floods disrupt normal water storage and increase the number of breeding sites for mosquitoes in and around human habitation, leading to outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases in densely populated areas.Crumbling infrastructure, overcrowded households, poor physical conditions, lack of hygiene facilities and often insurmountable obstacles to access to medical care are the norm in many areas. • Armed conflicts and mass displacement are nearly always associated with a significant increase of tuberculosis (TB). In northwest Syria, WHO and its partners run three specialized TB centers, equipped with medical supplies and lab, run by skilled staff, catering to Idleb, Afrin and rural Aleppo. Overcrowding is a hallmark of the living conditions of millions in Syria’s northwest; a key risk for TB transmission. Additionally, the impact of hostilities has limited case-finding and control of the disease and disrupted treatments, further heightening the looming risk of drug resistance. WHO’s focus in Syria’s NW is on strengthening general awareness and improving patient service. The services provided in the Idleb center by WHO’s partner, HIHFAD (Hand in hand for Aid and Development) are diagnosis, sputum analysis, radiology, drug provision and information on TB. The average number of beneficiaries per month is 250, although it fluctuates due to the fighting.Armed conflicts and mass displacement are nearly always associated with a significant increase of tuberculosis (TB). • Internally displaced persons (IDPs) staying in UNRWA camp in Southern Gaza. Over 1.5 million people in Gaza are estimated to be internally displaced, including about 778,000 IDPs who are staying in at least 154 UNRWA shelters. The number of IDPs in the south continues to increase, with UNRWA sheltering 627,000 people in 97 facilities, three of which were recently opened in Rafah.  Since 7 October 2023, the escalating crisis in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory has caused large numbers of civilian deaths and injuries. In the Gaza Strip, airstrikes and a lack of medical supplies, food, water and fuel have virtually depleted an already under-resourced health system. Hospitals have been operating far beyond capacity due to rising numbers of patients as well as displaced civilians seeking shelter. The provision of essential health services – from maternal and newborn care to treatment for chronic conditions – has been severely compromised. https://www.emro.who.int/opt/news/unfpa-unicef-and-who-regional-directors-call-for-immediate-action-to-halt-attacks-on-health-care-in-gaza.html  Internally displaced persons (IDPs) staying in UNRWA camp in Southern Gaza. • Under the slogan ‘Health for All’, this year, the theme of World Health Day is ‘Universal health coverage: everyone, everywhere’.

Dr Jaouad Mahjour, acting WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean

Access to universal health coverage can prevent people from being pushed into poverty because they are forced to pay for the costs of their health care. Without universal coverage, the lives and welfare of millions of people and communities around the world are negatively affected, particularly in low-income countries. Universal health coverage increases people’s opportunity to work and earn a living, increases children’s chances of reaching their full academic potential and forms the basis for long term economic development.
