  • Thousands of civilians require reconstructive surgeries and physical rehabilitation after a war between Israel and Hezbollah that‘s claimed more than 4,000 lives and injured 17,000 people in Lebanon.  WHO is training health workers on surgical skills in conflict settings, and as an extension of trauma care in Lebanese hospitals, a number of international Emergency Medical Teams are currently providing treatment to thousands of people with shrapnel, burns and blast wounds. One of those teams is working in the newly opened Turkish Trauma Hospital in Saida, south of the capital Beirut, alongside local staff. “25% of all war injuries to the limbs end with an amputation. And we know that 60% of war injuries are limb injuries. That means we have around 2,500 amputations in Lebanon. In the the long term, I think we need to focus on the physical rehabilitation for these people,” says Ahmad, WHO. “I think we'll be looking at reconstruction being needed for probably years, certainly the next six months are going to see a lot of complicated wounds, particularly arms and legs, that require specialist intervention,” says Sian, Burns and plastic surgeon from Interburns. “There will be a big burden on this hospital, as a trauma hospital. Many cases have deep shrapnel that prevent wounds from healing,” says Mohammad, Plastic surgeon from Interburns.Thousands of civilians require reconstructive surgeries and physical rehabilitation after a war between Israel and Hezbollah that‘s claimed more than 4,000 lives and injured 17,000 people in Lebanon.  WHO is training health workers on surgical skills in conflict settings, and as an extension of trauma care in Lebanese hospitals, a number of international Emergency Medical Teams are currently providing treatment to thousands of people with shrapnel, burns and blast wounds. • Dr Ahmed Zouiten, WHO representative in Libya in Derna to assess some of the needs in the health sector in the affected areas following the catastrophic floods that broke dams and swept away buildings and homes in Libya. Two weeks after Storm Daniel struck Libya, the scale of the damage is almost indescribable. The floods that followed left in their muddy wake a humanitarian crisis on a massive scale, particularly in Derna. An estimated 30 million cubic metres of water came roaring through the city when 2 dams in the nearby mountains collapsed. The torrent of water levelled entire city blocks and swept away whole families. Critical infrastructure has been destroyed or damaged, affecting health, electricity, roads, telecommunications and other services. This latest catastrophe adds enormous pressure to Libya’s already fragile and severely compromised health system, with prior limited access for many to appropriate health care. As well as addressing immediate health needs, WHO is actively engaged in assessing the long-term health requirements of the affected population displaced to temporary settlements and camps. Ensuring that they have access to essential health services as close as possible to their dwellings is a priority. https://www.emro.who.int/media/news/saving-lives-preventing-health-risks-and-restoring-health-care-services-in-the-aftermath-of-the-libya-floods.html?ver=1 https://www.emro.who.int/media/news/libya-a-disaster-of-epic-proportions.html https://www.emro.who.int/media/news/who-health-supplies-arrive-in-libya-as-part-of-intensified-response-to-devastating-floods.htmlDr Ahmed Zouiten, WHO representative in Libya in Derna to assess some of the needs in the health sector in the affected areas following the catastrophic floods that broke dams and swept away buildings and homes in Libya. • The Federal Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), observed World Immunization Week under the global theme of “The Big Catch-Up” with a resolve to strengthen primary health care and routine immunization across the country and ensure that no one is left behind. World Immunization Week 2023 is being observed during the global COVID-19 pandemic and hence it has been given the theme of ‘The Big Catch-Up’. World Immunization Week was initially endorsed in May 2012 by the World Health Assembly (WHO's decision-making body) and the first World Immunization Week was observed the same year across 180 Member States of WHO. The Federal Minister for Health Dr Ali Haji, on this occasion expressed gratitude to WHO and UNICEF for coordinating and collaborating with multiple partners and helping his government to catch up on lost progress in essential immunization, as a result of the global pandemic. Acknowledging the worst ever drought gripping the country, resulting in huge population displacement and outbreaks of diseases. The Federal Ministry of Health, WHO and UNICEF during 2022 have jointly implemented 4 rounds of accelerated immunization activities, 5 polio campaigns, 8 campaigns for COVID-19, and nationwide integrated measles, tOPV, vitamin A and deworming campaigns. Additionally, WHO deployed more than 2100 community health workers while UNICEF has deployed over 6000 social mobilizers across the country to disseminate health messages to over 4.5 million people, as well as track and help immunize children who missed out on immunization. The community health workers have been working to find, register and refer the missed-out children and pregnant women to nearby health facilities and outreach sessions. https://www.emro.who.int/somalia/news/world-immunization-week-2023-somalia-resolves-to-work-on-the-big-catch-up.htmlThe Federal Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), observed World Immunization Week under the global theme of “The Big Catch-Up” with a resolve to strengthen primary health care and routine immunization across the country and ensure that no one is left behind. • Dr Ahmed Al Mandhari, WHO regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean listens to a young woman injured by the earthquake in Latakia, Syria. On 6 February 2023, a series of large earthquakes hit southern Türkiye and northern Syria, followed by hundreds of aftershocks. Thousands of lives were lost in the initial earthquakes and thousands more are at risk given the destruction of infrastructure and freezing temperatures in the affected areas. Efforts in the immediate aftermath of the earthquakes and the following days are focused on search and rescue, finding survivors among the rubble of collapsed buildings. Other urgent needs are providing medical care for people with physical injuries and ensuring food, drinking water and shelter for all those who have lost their homes. Ensuring continuous access to basic health services is also critical. Since the earthquake hit Syria, WHO has been providing supplies and working with health officials to direct medical teams and support to where they are most needed. WHO has also released more than US$ 16 million from the Contingency Fund for Emergencies, including US$ 3 million within hours of the disaster, in both Türkiye and the Syrian Arab Republic.  Dr Ahmed Al Mandhari, WHO regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean listens to a young woman injured by the earthquake in Latakia, Syria. • Under the slogan ‘Health for All’, this year, the theme of World Health Day is ‘Universal health coverage: everyone, everywhere’

Access to universal health coverage can prevent people from being pushed into poverty because they are forced to pay for the costs of their health care. Without universal coverage, the lives and welfare of millions of people and communities around the world are negatively affected, particularly in low-income countries. Universal health coverage increases people’s opportunity to work and earn a living, increases children’s chances of reaching their full academic potential and forms the basis for long term economic development.
