  • At Al Iman Primary Health Center and Acute Watery Diarrhea sentinel site. In a fact-finding mission to Arsal region, in the Baalbek District, a team led by UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Lebanon Imran Riza accompanied by WHO representative in Lebanon Dr Abdinasir Abubakar, UNICEF deputy representative Ettie Higgins, OCHA head of office Kristen Knutson joint by their teams and stakeholders including Ministry of Public Health went to check on the current challenges facing access to WASH and associated public health challenges in the Arsal region, in the Baalbek District. The journey started off with a meeting at the office of Baalbek-Hermel Governor Bachir Khodr followed by a larger meeting at the Arsal Municipality where challenges and bottles necks were voiced by mayors (mukhtars) and stakeholders and potential opportunities were voiced by the UN team. The mayors call for help was loud and clear. Their urgent concern was for access to clean water calling for provision of a water filtration station since the water that gets to their homes is wastewater. They said the large influx of Syrian refugees to their areas is partly to blame for the economic, development and health crises in the area. They pointed out that most of the support that comes to Arsal are not for the citizens but that the refugees benefit from it and complained about the ineffectiveness of meetings that amount to nothing. They warned that they don’t want the Syrians anymore who get paid from UNHCR and get aid from other agencies.  The visit to Al Iman Primary Health Center & Acute Watery Diarrhea sentinel site was to better understand the burden of diseases, unmet needs, operational challenges to health programmes that the PHC faces. The next stop was to an Informal Settlement in Arsal that has 63 households, 321 individuals, with recurring sanitation and wastewater removal issues. The last leg of the visit by the mission was to the wastewater dumping ponds in the outskirt of Arsal. The visit brought to the forefront crucial issues faced by the people living in Arsal whether the host communities or the Syrian refugees. Understanding the current practices of wastewater management and their public health and environmental impact and potential short and mid-term solutions.  At Al Iman Primary Health Center and Acute Watery Diarrhea sentinel site. • Destroyed buildings turned to rubble. On 6 February 2023, a series of large earthquakes hit southern Türkiye and northern Syria, followed by hundreds of aftershocks. Thousands of lives were lost in the initial earthquakes and thousands more are at risk given the destruction of infrastructure and freezing temperatures in the affected areas. Efforts in the immediate aftermath of the earthquakes and the following days are focused on search and rescue, finding survivors among the rubble of collapsed buildings. Other urgent needs are providing medical care for people with physical injuries and ensuring food, drinking water and shelter for all those who have lost their homes. Ensuring continuous access to basic health services is also critical. Since the earthquake hit Syria, WHO has been providing supplies and working with health officials to direct medical teams and support to where they are most needed. WHO has also released more than US$ 16 million from the Contingency Fund for Emergencies, including US$ 3 million within hours of the disaster, in both Türkiye and the Syrian Arab Republic.  Destroyed buildings turned to rubble. • Under the slogan ‘Health for All’, this year, the theme of World Health Day is ‘Universal health coverage: everyone, everywhere’

Access to universal health coverage can prevent people from being pushed into poverty because they are forced to pay for the costs of their health care. Without universal coverage, the lives and welfare of millions of people and communities around the world are negatively affected, particularly in low-income countries. Universal health coverage increases people’s opportunity to work and earn a living, increases children’s chances of reaching their full academic potential and forms the basis for long term economic development.
